General Tryout Information
Tryouts are held in mid-to-late June and throughout July for the upcoming seasons (Fall 2025/Spring 2026). Spots are not guaranteed; kids have to try out every year. Individualized tryouts for the specialized positions of catcher and pitcher, or to accommodate player availability, may be requested directly to each team’s coach but it is within their discretion on whether or not to accommodate such a request and is less likely at the younger levels.
Cardinal coaches seek the most qualified players in each age group to represent CMRC to ensure we field competitive teams. During tryouts, coaches evaluate fundamental baseball skills, situational playing skills (i.e. game IQ), focus, attitude (i.e. resiliency and sportsmanship), discipline, and team playing skills. As a CMRC program, we do have a preference for local players sourced from our community in and around the Baldwin, Glen Arm, Jacksonville, and Phoenix, Maryland areas. We have this preference because we believe that local players lead to more cohesive teams which help to strengthen community bonds.
Not all players are selected for the travel team on their first attempt, as participation requires a certain level of skill and game awareness. Some athletes may benefit from additional development before competing at the travel league level. To ensure a positive experience and continued growth, we encourage these players to refine their abilities and deepen their understanding of the game by participating in CMRC’s rec league as well as consider private camps and clinics. The rec environment allows them to build confidence, enhance their skills, and nurture their passion for baseball. With dedication and improvement, they may be better prepared for future tryouts and the challenges of competitive travel baseball.
